Hollywood meets the Riviera...

The Grand-Hotel du Cap-Ferrat is being used as a set for an anticipated movie, called “All These Violent Delights”, the first risk-taking venture of the famous Starlight Pictures Studio. Approved by the executives as a sure Oscar contender and a guaranteed hit, the movie is also based on a best-selling novel. The movie is directed by the awarded Raymond Reed and it tells a story about a love triangle and a murder conspiracy, meaning it has everything one might look for in a movie: star-crossed lovers, betrayal, twists and turns to spin you around, and the cast to carry all of it perfectly!

...and these two worlds collide and intertwine!

Welcome to the Character Claim for All These Violent Delights!

After the lessons learnt in the last contest set in a similar universe, I've decided to give the genre another go and thus present you All These Violent Delights, a mystery set in 1935 on the French Riviera, in the picturesque town of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. The story is centred around the making of the movie that shares the title with the contest name, and everyone involved in the making - some more, some less, but equally intertwined with the plot. My idea is to create some balance between plot-centred mystery and playing with characters and their relationships, emotions, and inner turmoil.

Rules & Mechanics
1. Clearly set deadlines to help me with managing a contest in time, which is one of my weak points. It will usually mean you have an extra 2-6 hours after the round closes because I need a bit of time to read, write and post impressions, but if you see your impression is posted, please proceed to the next round.
2. Character backgrounds a not as strict this time around and their relationships with other extras will be displayed clearly and won't be up for negotiation. That said, friendships will be current, romances will mainly be a matter of the past (up to you if you wish to rekindle them) - and no marriages this time around. 
3. Secrets will be revealed in your character information sheet, just like the last time. It will be given in time.
4. Also, finite number of people - I might throw out a person or two, depending on who is claimed.
5. Consider this as writing within an existing structure before joining: it might not be everyone's cup of tea.
6.  Should you decide to drop out, for any reason at all, your character remains part of the story once we have started.
7. Every character - male and female, listed below - is up for claim. Some characters might be gender-swapped if left unclaimed, some might be added - depending on who is claimed.
8. My favourite: ask, don't assume!

Alaia is the starlet playing the main role in the movie. She's a certified bombshell leading star, a known money-maker for the studio, recently divorced and a true paparazzi magnet. Rumour has it Alaia is being quite a diva on this shoot which has hardly begun - and utterly unhappy with the fact she has to share the lead on this one, especially after years of friendship with the director, Raymond Reed.

Tilly van de Moor claimed by Bambi
age: between 23 and 26
The ingénue of the Starlight Pictures Studio and the other main role in the movie, whispers claim her to be the lover of the producer Thomas L. Bradbury - and the muse of the director Raymond Reed himself. While some claim she lacks talent, some see no truth in any vicious gossip, considering Tilly to be a talented, up-and-coming star well-deserving of the role.

Felix LaRue
age: between 28 and 33
Felix is the male lead of the movie, a notorious womanizer and scandalous figure - if you want to trust the gossip magazines. Felix is French-born American, just like the main role in the book, but the rumour has it Vita St. Clair was not happy with him playing the lead role - but his friendship with Raymond Reed tipped the scales and granted him the role.

Vita St.Clair
age: between 25 and 27
Vita is a countess, writer and screenplay writer as of recently - her book is being adapted into a movie, and she is part of the project, a very unique honour not commonly extended to authors. Rumours about her swirl between calling her a passionate advocate of her vision and an absolute control freak. With a director like Raymond Reed, it's hard to say if the problem is with her, or his strict ways of running things on the set.

Thomas L. Bradbury
age: between 35 and 40
Thomas is a producer who comes from old money, who allegedly bought his way into the film industry and the Starlight Pictures Studio.  He's been a passionate filmmaker, dabbled in acting and does not shy away from closely working on his favoured projects. While his approach to the art is entirely different from Reed's approach, the two have shared some kind of understanding for years, even when they aren't on the best of terms.

Borna pl. Glembay claimed by Dare
age: between 26 and 30
Croatian countess with a mysterious past, one of the most famous art dealers in Europe, with great connections and good business instincts - Borna is alleged to be included as a consultant on the project as per the personal request of Raymond Reed. Her stay at the Riviera is divided between leisure, seeking new pieces and occasionally visiting the set, mainly keeping to herself.

Charles Reed
age: between 33 and 35
The younger brother of Raymond Reed seems to be the sheer opposite of his older sibling. Charles is a priest of the Anglican Church, well-educated and isn't known to be the adventurer Raymond is. He likes to stay from the spotlight that was shone on their family when Raymond became a household name in Hollywood, he is dedicated to different missions around the world and still makes time to visit his brother in various locations, just because he can.
Note: Charles is brother to Raymond Reed, whose FC is Toby Stephens.

Eleanor Janvier claimed by Schogo
age: between 30 and 35 
Ellie Janvier, as most often called, is the current owner of the hotel. Her husband - who got the hotel as the inheritance - passed away two years ago and Ellie took it to herself to invest in the renovation of the legendary place to restore it to its old glory. When she found out the childhood friend of her late husband is making a movie set on the Riviera, she reached out to Raymond and offered the hotel to be the place for the shoot.

Arlene Plamondon
age: between 28 and 30
Arlene is the hotel manager in the Grand-Hotel du Cap-Ferrat and the person who has been part of the renovation since it started. French-born and with a family history in hospitality, she is trusted by co-workers and Eleanor alike. She serves as the liaison between the hotel and the movie crew currently, spending much of her time divided between the set and her regular duties.

Sigrid Eriksen
age: between 25 and 30
The Grand-Hotel du Cap-Ferrat's main concierge, Sigrid is a polyglot and a true professional. She moved to France only a few years back, seeking employment at the Riviera and soon rose a few ranks before the hotel even started taking in guests. Sigrid is in charge of all the VIP guests, which includes the main stars of the movie - both cast and crew.

The soon-to-be-ex-wife of Raymond Reed is setting sail on the Riviera, according to the tabloids, galavanting around with another man - and everyone believes there is no coincidence that she is staying at the same hotel. At one point, gossip columns were sure his infidelity was the cause for the end of their marriage, this recent turn of events might point to a whole other story.

Evgeniya Kurakin
age: between 28 and 31
Eva is a daughter of an impoverished Russian baron and an American nurse, currently between jobs as au pair, and most likely scouting for her next gig amongst the patrons of the Grand-Hotel du Cap-Ferret. Eva is familiar with the hotel and the staff as the family she previously worked for used to spend their summers there before the hotel went into the renovation.

Manon is a recently graduated art historian, and about to get to experience life abroad - in Egypt, nonetheless! But, before that, she is set to endure a working summer with her estranged father and try to follow the instructions: do not get involved with any of the actors, do not get your photo taken by the paparazzi and do not get in the way. In reality, it's a summer that leaves a lot to be desired, and there is not too much that can be done about it.
Note: Manon is the biological daughter of Raymond Reed, whose FC is Toby Stephens.

Enzo is a wealthy Italian industrial who prides himself to be a collector who takes his vacations on the French Riviera, living a lavish life, partying like there is no tomorrow and does his worst at avoiding the persistent press following his every move. Ready to take sail at the end of the summer, Enzo is allegedly waiting for a few more people to join in on his adventure. While the press might have him pegged as a mindless heir, the truth might be quite the opposite - as he is often surrounded by people much smarter than he seems to be waiting for his advice.

A young constable with an ambition to become a detective whose ties to the Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat community will make her a clear choice to assist the detective Matthew Bancroft as he joins the case. Nicola is one of the rare female police officers in the French police, and this will be her first case where she gets to do beyond administrative support.

What do you consider to be your most admirable personal quality? From your perspective, what is your biggest flaw?

Without any doubt, my trustworthiness... a secret will always stay safe with me, no matter how hard some people try to convince me otherwise.

As for my biggest flaw... this has to be my impatience. I hate waiting whether it be for people or when I'm really looking forward to something... it is like the worst feeling for me.

What do you think you excel in? What do you think you do badly?

I work hard... always putting all my efforts into whatever work I'm dealing with at the moment... I'm aware that I might not always be the fastest but I get the job done... it isn't  unusual for me to be working at various things at the same time.

I can't keep my stuff organized no matter how hard a try. It would easier if I just knew where to look when I'm searching for something but I don't... honestly, I don't want to know the hours I had lost while looking for something.

Are you more likely to ask for permission or forgiveness?

Permission... I never quite know what to say when I'm asking for forgiveness and constantly worry that my apology isn't enough.

Do you have any bad habits?

I bit my nails, chew my lower lip or play with my hair whenever I'm feeling nervous... and there is a chance that I will tap with my fingers on any surface I can find if my impatience grows too big. Oh, and I smoke and according to good friends, almost too much.

What’s your idea of a really fun time?

Going for a walk along the beach or horseback riding through the nearby woods for a few hours.

What do you consider to be an admirable quality in others? How about something you cannot look past, a deal breaker?

A honest and friendly nature... someone who is loyal and isn't afraid of speaking his mind but still manages to stay friendly about it.

A nasty attitude... someone who openly expresses how much better they are compared to others and constantly mention their achievements.

How do you handle conflict with others?

Not very well... I often don't know how to speak my mind and simply find it easier to agree with the other person or to apologize... I don't like being on bad terms with others.

How do you handle rejection?

Depends on the situation... if someone were to reject my apology, I would most certainly not handle it very well...instead, keep wondering about what I could have done different.

How well would you handle a long-distance relationship? How would you feel after a one-night stand?

Honestly, I don't really see myself in a long-distance relationship but I guess it would be worth a try if the love and trust are there... it might not always be easy but if you truly want it to work out, you have to work hard for it.

Oh, I don't do one-night stands... never really understood the appeal of spending just one night with someone... even worse if you don't really know the other person.

How do you feel in large groups versus small ones?

I have always felt more comfortable in a smaller setting... makes it easier to talk with each other... and I tend to lose my focus when I'm in the company of too many people at the same time.

Dedication - I don’t let go of a task I need to complete, or if I need to get to the bottom of. But I’m terrible at keeping track of things that don’t interest me, I either forget or ignore it completely. Might make me a good secret keeper, actually, because I genuinely don’t recall anything I’m uninterested in.

2. What do you think you excel in? What do you think you do badly?
Chasing down odd scraps of information that come up if they look like they’re promising. I’m always good at shaking out information and getting what I  need. And what do I do badly… uh. Socialising in big groups. Remembering unimportant people or details. What counts as unimportant? Pull up a chair, I’ve got a bit to talk about…

3. Are you more likely to ask for permission or forgiveness?
Forgiveness. Sometimes the things you need won’t come to you if you ask for permission.

4. Do you have any bad habits?
I fiddle with my rings when nervous, and have a tendency to get too absorbed in my own thoughts, and lose track of conversations and time chasing those rabbit holes.

5. What’s your idea of a really fun time?
Going out to exotic locales to get my hands on the newest artworks unearthed. Watching art restorations and listening to the history and theories behind it. Otherwise, a quiet round of card games - poker or bridge suit me just fine. It’s fun to guess and figure out what the other person’s hand is.

6. What do you consider to be an admirable quality in others? How about something you cannot look past, a deal breaker?
An admirable quality? The willingness to entertain alternate viewpoints, or to debate an opinion that you personally don’t hold - but be convincing about it. It’s a good mental exercise. But I cannot get past someone who has no respect for personal boundaries or privacy - push too much, and you’re asking for trouble.

7. How do you handle conflict with others?
Depends on the conflict. If it's an academic disagreement, I’m happy to debate. If it’s personal - well. The less time I spend with them, the better. And if I absolutely have to deal with them, I do the bare minimum, and then let them figure out the rest. I’m not particularly good with in-your-face confrontation.

8. How do you handle rejection?
Not sure. I’m sad at first, but I tend to recover quite quickly.

9. How well would you handle a long-distance relationship? How would you feel after a one-night stand?
It depends. If the spark is still there in a long-distance relationship, I’m willing to pursue it, but if it dies or it’s uninteresting, I’d rather let it go. One-night stands are different: I must’ve felt something in order to be willing to engage in said one-night stand, so I’m indifferent to it? More like a learning experience, and you take something away from each person.

10. How do you feel in large groups versus small ones?
Small groups are the ideal gathering size for me: enough time to pay attention to people (or to figure out they’re not that interesting), and plenty of time to dig in depth on different topics. Large groups… I’m not comfortable with. There’s too many people in one place, and it leaves me feeling unmoored and disoriented.

Perhaps it’s the fact that I can get along well with people and be quite social. That helps a lot with my line of work. The biggest flaw would be… hmm, well, the fact that I don’t trust people and can’t believe anyone could be genuine without wanting something out it --or you. The flaw in that means that everyone ends up being suspicious to me.

2. What do you think you excel in? What do you think you do badly?
Oh, I excel at jotting down notes and details. I’m an overthinker and will make note of anything and everything. What I do badly? Well, the ability to stop overthinking and allow myself to trust others a little more.

3. Are you more likely to ask for permission or forgiveness? 
Forgiveness. Permission can stop you from something, whereas you can always ask for forgiveness after achieving your goal.

4. Do you have any bad habits?
Don’t we all?

I try not to have conflicts, need all the networking I can get. But if I do have conflicts… well, I’d try and clear it out. Only if I think it’s worth it, though.

I wonder, sometimes, if I am presumptuous to be awed and inspired by my own success. It’s probably the greatest and worst trait about me… this never-ending drive. What I want, I go for, overcoming obstacles no matter what they may be… and I can’t be bothered with holding back due to some nobody’s opinion. I know my fans love me… and those few boorish, pre-historic critics who keep underrating me… well, they just need to get with the times.

Okay, okay... perhaps, maybe... if someone were to really dig deep, I'm a horrid cook! It's a good thing I have hired chefs to keep that secret.

What’s your idea of a really fun time?
If people only knew there beat the heart of a true romantic under this verifiably egotistical and impulsive armor, they’d surely use it against me. Few know of my interest in making pottery but it is one of my secret loves. I'm really keen about sneaking into movie premiers incognito… a discreet Speakeasy… and quality shopping, just to name a few.


Do you have any bad habits?
Bad is subjective… I wouldn't be surprised if others think I probably have them all... some strong hooch, potent stogies, gooey chocolate, and lots of hunky cool cats... sounds like Heaven to me.

I find confidence both highly attractive and extremely admirable. And resilience... act it until you become it!

I abhor laziness and people that are unmotivated and unimaginative. What an utter turn-off.

Conflict? Who me? I am a totally friendly person most of the time. But if they wish to carry their conflict too far, well, let's just say that they won't see my handling of their conflict coming before it hits them that I have dealt with it.


How do you handle rejection?
I don't believe in rejection. I am fine with being incompatible with others or a role I may have been interested in. There is always another opportunity beyond that one.


How well would you handle a long-distance relationship? How would you feel after a one-night stand?
I'd never admit it but a monogamous long-distance relationship would never work out for me. Meaningful overnight relationships work into my work schedule quite nicely... and really, a one-night stand is truly just an audition... sometimes you don't give them a callback.

My most admirable personal quality is seeing beauty in things others may dismiss. My biggest flaw is a willingness to let my emotions stew until they bubble over.

I excel at making connections, and when necessary amends. However, I don't handle conflict well.

Forgiveness

I've been known to gossip and to overspend.

Depending on my mood and the available company, it could be a quiet night alone with a book or a rendezvous in a forbidden locale.

I admire a person who's self-assured but my deal breaker is someone who is clingy or overbearing.

In general I try to avoid it altogether.

Being rejected is a part of life...being embarrassed in conjunction with that rejection is however another thing entirely.

9. How well would you handle a long-distance relationship? How would you feel after a one-night stand?
With the right person either a long-distance relationship or a one-night stand could work, the problem is the lack of such people.

10. How do you feel in large groups versus small ones?
It all depends on the people in those groups.

Traits: Shallow, vain, narcissistic, curious, observant, sweet, goofy

Background: Alaia is the starlet playing the main role in the movie. She's a certified bombshell leading star, a known money-maker for the studio, recently divorced and a true paparazzi magnet. Rumour has it Alaia is being quite a diva on this shoot which has hardly begun - and utterly unhappy with the fact she has to share the lead on this one, especially after years of friendship with the director, Raymond Reed.

1. What do you consider to be your most admirable personal quality? From your perspective, what is your biggest flaw?
My beauty. My acting. Too many too count. Flaw? As if I have any!

2. What do you think you excel in? What do you think you do badly?
Pretending to be someone else. Badly....obviously nothing..however there was this one time my assistant called me too pretty to be normal. So maybe that.

3. Are you more likely to ask for permission or forgiveness?
Neither. But unless the situation really really calls for it then perhaps forgiveness.

All my habits are perfect.

I can fun doing anything! It's the company that makes it fun or not for me.

Honesty and integrity in everything that they do. Ugh, liars are the worst. Constantly stabbing me in the back.

Depends on how important the person is to me. For a director I can play nice and diplomatic-maybe even ask for forgiveness.
But some standard nobody, I'll either ignore or fight depending on my mood.

I dont get rejected. And even if I did (on the tiniest slim chance), I handle it like a queen...the one in Wonderland.

Long distance relationships aren't real.
One night stands are the way to survive.

I thrive in any groups, but I feel more comfortable in small intimate groups. Less people to focus on impressing.
