A Christmas Deer Story Gerda was the Earl's only daughter . Because her father had committed the sin of killing a sacred animal during a hunt, while her own mother was in labour, she had been under a curse that plagued her since she was a little girl.
Every winter, from the first night of Advent, to the night of Three Kings'Day, she turned into a deer and had to roam all night in search of stranded travelers , wounded woodcutters or any other person in need of help, that she could save from danger and put back on the right track .
It had lasted for many winters . On one dark night she heard the pleas of a young Lord in distress whose horse had gone into a mad gallup, and sent him flying into a freezing cold deep pond. She helped him pull out of the icy waters by letting him grab her antlers .
When he was safely on the ground, his whole body shivering and almost blue, he bid her to tell him her name, and handed her a splendid white rose -shaped jewel made of jade and pearls, which he carried on his chest as a gift for the betrothed he had yet to meet.
She accepted the gift, as she would always when she was thanked for her good deeds, but fled before he could learn her name.
He spent the next days frantically enquiring and searching for her , to no avail.
The young Lord turned out to be the heir to the nearby Duchy . His father and Gerda's had signed a treaty and decided their own children's marriage would be the best warranty of its success.
Gerda was under such a spell that she could not reveal her secret to anyone, without risking her father's life . When they were finally formally introduced to each other, she was still carrying the white rose.
The young Duke turned very pale, and offered to walk with her in the garden, blanketed in snow. There he dropped on his knees and poured his heart out. She told him she could not in conscience ask him to share the burden of a curse . His eyes started to overflow with tears and her beauty and her tenderness were overwhelming . This moved her soul so much that she leaned over him, then softly kissed his forehead .
The rose she was holding close then bloomed into a real, fragrant flower, and every single tall bush or tree around them seemed to slowly bow down then shiver with joy.
The curse had been lifted . For as long as this happy pair lived, there never was a deer killed in the forest again. And at every Christmas Mass , a prayer and an anthem were dedicated to all its wild inhabitants, big or small.
